Scientific Meeting: Neuromodulation in Sports
In partnership with SONAFE, the Center promotes another Update in Sports Sciences
By Raiana Monteiro - inOn September 25th, at the headquarters of Clube de Regatas do Flamengo, in Gávea, in partnership with SONAFE (National Society of Sports Physiotherapy), CUIDAR held another Scientific Meeting, this time under the theme "Neuromodulation in Sports." The event featured a lecture by Dr. Artur Padão Gosling, Master of Science/Clinical Medicine from UFRJ and Specialist in Sports Physiotherapy.
"Flamengo, in partnership with SONAFE through CUIDAR, promotes periodic scientific meetings to address topics relevant to sports. This time, we brought Artur (Padão) to discuss neuromodulation, which is the nervous system's ability to modulate and modify itself as a result of stimuli. We use an electrostimulator that works through electrodes placed on the patient's skull, in specific regions of the area to be treated. In other words, we treat the periphery by stimulating the central nervous system, the cerebral cortex," explains Alexandre Montenegro, CUIDAR's Physiotherapy Coordinator. He adds:
"There's a mapping system, for example, to treat knee pain. We directly stimulate the predetermined region of the cerebral cortex related to that location. We already have some proven scientific results regarding pain, and we're researching improvements in muscle trophism and sports performance. But what we currently have evidence for are results in pain treatments, especially chronic pain in patients who fail conventional treatment. It's a new therapy that's already showing some results," concludes Alexandre.
